TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - US President-elect Donald Trump, who has sharply criticized California's response to the devastating Los Angeles wildfires, said on Saturday that he would likely visit the area next week after his inauguration, Reuters reported.
The wildfires have killed at least 27 people as of Friday and destroyed more than 10,000 buildings in the Pacific Palisades and Altadena neighborhoods.
"I'll (go), probably, by the end of the week," Trump, a Republican who will be inaugurated on Monday, told NBC in an interview.
"I wanted to go ... yesterday, but I think it would be better if I went as president. It's a little more appropriate, I guess."
A political spat has erupted between Trump and California Governor Gavin Newsom over the Los Angeles fires that have killed at least 24 people and burned large swathes of southern California.
In a series of inflammatory posts on his platform, Truth Social, Trump has accused Newsom's administration of failing to prevent and respond to the wildfires.
"One of the best and most beautiful parts of the United States is burning to the ground. It's ash, and Gavin 'Newscum' should resign. It's all his fault!!!" Trump said.
Newsom has tried to appease Trump in a letter inviting him to survey the damage in LA. But he also warned the incoming president against using "a human tragedy for political gain" and spreading "disinformation from the sidelines."
Trump also accused Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass of incompetence and said President Joe Biden left no money in the Federal Emergency Management Agency budget.
Officials told most evacuees from the Los Angeles fires Thursday to stay away from their homes for at least another week as emergency responders remove toxic waste from burned neighborhoods and cut off power and gas lines that pose hazards amid the rubble.
Landslides have further endangered shattered hillsides, where flattened buildings are no longer holding the soil in place and water from fire hoses and broken pipes has soaked through the ground, adding more stress to people suffering from the worst natural disaster in Los Angeles history.
Estimates of the damage range from $20 billion to $45 billion. Rents are soaring and uncertainty over insurance settlements is leaving some evacuees in limbo.
