TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) stated that Garuda Indonesia's plan to become a state-owned airline holding company will bolster national connectivity and the aerospace ecosystem.

"Regarding air transportation, I support our aerospace sector and domestic airlines, especially our flag carrier, Garuda Indonesia. This opens massive opportunities because demand for flight services is still very high, particularly given that our nation is an archipelago where many regions rely on aircraft," AHY said in Jakarta on Monday.

He said the national industry continues to be fortified to meet the growing demands of the public. "Hopefully, this will lower air transport costs and advance our industrial aerospace ecosystem, which is also very important," he said.

For context, Danantara, alongside the State-Owned Enterprise Regulatory Agency (BP BUMN), is pushing for the consolidation of state-owned airlines by merging Pelita Air into Garuda Indonesia to strengthen the national aviation industry.

"Garuda Indonesia will serve as our airline holding company, and Pelita will become part of Garuda Indonesia," said Dony Oskaria, Head of BP BUMN and COO of Danantara.

Dony believes that consolidating state-owned airlines will sharpen the group's capacity to navigate competition in the aviation industry. Through this consolidation, he added, these companies will have a stronger footing to compete and lead the market.

In addition to reinforcing corporate structure, Dony emphasized that aviation is a business requiring high precision and quick decision-making in every operational aspect to sustain company performance.

"The aviation industry is an industry that requires precision and must be managed day by day, minute by minute. As soon as an airplane takes off, we can already calculate the profit or loss of that single flight. So, it is critical to analyze every route and connection," Dony said.
