TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Minister of Human Rights, Natalius Pigai, has spoken out about a video statement made by the Chair of the Majelis Syuro Partai Ummat, Amien Rais. The narrative in the video implicates the names of President Prabowo Subianto and Cabinet Secretary Lieutenant Colonel Teddy Indra Wijaya.
Pigai stated that the statements made by Amien Rais are not necessarily a form of freedom of speech. "Mr. Amien is suspected of violating human rights," said Pigai on Sunday, May 3, 2026.
According to Pigai, Amien Rais is suspected of committing several forms of human rights violations. First, intentional 'inhuman treatment' that causes severe mental distress.
Second, Pigai also criticized Amien Rais for 'inhuman degrading' by degrading the dignity of Prabowo and Teddy. He stated that the statement contains elements of verbal abuse and verbal violence.
Natalius Pigai urged Amien Rais not to hide behind the dogma of freedom of speech. "Because there are limits to it," said Pigai in his written statement.
Amien Rais claimed that the statement he made in the video is part of the freedom of speech. "I am sure democracy will run smoothly if the freedom to express opinions guaranteed by our Constitution is not restricted or silenced," said Amien.
Meanwhile, Amien stated that he has his own reasons for alleging that the relationship between Prabowo and Teddy has exceeded professional boundaries. "It is almost convincing that there is something very unusual about Brother Teddy," said Amien.
Previously, Amien Rais claimed that Prabowo and Teddy had a relationship beyond professional boundaries in a video uploaded on his personal YouTube account, with a duration of about eight minutes. As of Saturday morning, May 2, 2026, the video has disappeared from Amien Rais's YouTube account.
Minister of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) Meutya Hafid stated that the contents of the video are hoaxes and defamation, and contain hate speech. "The narrative constructed is an attempt to degrade the highest leaders of the country, has no factual basis, and is part of an effort to provoke public unrest," said Meutya in a written statement on Friday, May 1, 2026.
For Meutya, the narrative has the potential to divide the nation. She emphasized that the digital democratic space is a space for exchanging ideas, not for producing hate content that attacks the dignity of any human being.
Meutya also ensured that her ministry will take legal steps in accordance with the applicable laws. The legal violations referred to are based on Article 27A and Article 28 paragraph (2) of the ITE Law.
