TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Barcelona coach Hansi Flick emphasized that Lamine Yamal must continue to work hard and sustain his form, particularly referencing his performance against Inter Milan, if he aspires to reach the heights of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
"He knows what I want from him," said Flick ahead of the La Liga clash with Real Valladolid on Saturday, May 3, 2025.
At just 17, Yamal opened the scoring for Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final against Inter Milan, a thrilling 3-3 draw that earned him widespread acclaim.
Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi hailed Yamal as a once-in-50-years talent, while Flick described the young forward as a genius.
"When you are able to play at this level, you have to show it again. It's not about one game. Every player has potential to get better and this is also what he needs," Flick noted.
"It's not only the talent, the genius he is, it's also hard work when you want to reach this level, [like Cristiano] Ronaldo, [Lionel] Messi, the big, big players in the past. We all have to stay calm and let's see what happens. We are really happy that he's playing with us and he's on this level at 17, it's unbelievable," he added.
Flick also underlined that Yamal must maintain his work ethic to keep performing at a high level. The coach remains confident that the La Masia product has room to grow.
"I think also he wants this. It's not the end," said Flick.
Barcelona’s Squad Rotation
Yamal has tallied 24 goals this season, but may be among the players rested when Barcelona visits last-placed Valladolid. A win is crucial to prevent Real Madrid from closing the gap.
Barcelona is expected to rotate its lineup against Valladolid, who have already been relegated. With five games left in the La Liga season, Barça holds a four-point advantage over their rivals.
"LaLiga is the most important trophy. When you win this title, it's the honest title. For a long, long season, you have to play at the highest level."
"It doesn't matter where Valladolid are playing next season, they are now in LaLiga. We respect them. We are focused. You can lose the LaLiga title in these matches," concluded Flick, who previously enjoyed success with Bayern Munich.
