TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Several female prisoners residing in the Cikarang correctional facility have been moved to the Bandung women's prison due to the floods in Bekasi. This Bekasi flood was caused by the overflow of the Bekasi River after receiving water from the Bogor area.
"Inmates of the Cikarang Prison have been relocated to a higher location. Until now, the situation remains conducive and under control," said Mashudi, the Director General of Corrections (Dirjenpas) of the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections, in a written statement on Tuesday, March 4, 2025.
Amid the floods, Mashudi ensured that the prison inmates continued to receive services such as security, food, and care for sick prisoners. They also inspect of the prison area, which houses 1,451 prisoners.
Mashudi also reminded the Cikarang Prison Warden and staff to coordinate with the state electricity company (PLN) and the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) to support the recovery efforts from the flood. In addition, Mahsudi asked the Cikarang Police to evacuate some inmates temporarily.
In this incident, the Cikarang Prison stated that it had pumped floodwater, which was then released outside the prison area with the assistance of pumps from the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD). It also received facilities in the form of rubber boats. "We continue to monitor and coordinate with various parties in handling the flood at the Cikarang Prison," said Mashudi.
The Head of the Bekasi City Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Priadi Santoso, explained that heavy rainfall was the cause of the floods, worsened by similar conditions in the upstream of the Bekasi River, particularly in Bogor, resulting in high river water levels and overflowing.
"Heavy and prolonged intense rainfall upstream of the Bekasi River and Bekasi City resulted in increased water discharge and flooding in several areas," said Priadi.
At least 20 flood points were scattered across seven districts in Bekasi City, with water levels ranging from 20 centimeters to three meters, forcing thousands of residents to evacuate. The floods submerged seven districts, including Bekasi Timur, Bekasi Utara, Bekasi Selatan, Medan Satria, Jatiasih, Pondok Gede, and Rawalumbu districts.
