TEMPO.CO, Bekasi - A resident of Bekasi City with the initials DW, 27, found an object suspected to be an active grenade in a garden area at Jatisampurna District, on Friday, January 24, 2025, at around 3:30 p.m.
Jatisampurna Police Chief Didik Tri Maryanto said DW was looking for birds around the location. Suddenly, DW stumbled over an object partially embedded in the ground.
"The witness then saw the object and the object resembled a throwing explosive weapon (grenade)," Didik said in his official statement on Saturday, January 25, 2025.
DW sought the help of another witness with the initials SR, 26, to ensure that his discovery was a real grenade or a toy. Both suspected the grenade was real and reported the discovery to the Jatisampurna Police.
The police immediately went to the scene and coordinated with the Bomb Disposal Team (Jibom) of the Gegana Corps Brimob Polri. The results of the inspection showed that the object found was an active grenade.
"Upon arrival at the scene, we then conducted EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) activities on the suspected grenade, which was found to be an active grenade," Didik said.
The JIBOM team also deactivated the grenade by detonating it. The reason for this was to avoid the risk of an evacuation. The police also searched the area. Didik confirmed that only one grenade was found. However, the origin of the object is still under police investigation.
