TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The earthquake that occurred off the east coast of Hokkaido at 21:15 WIB (Western Indonesian Times), as reported by the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), was a result of the subduction activity of the Pacific Plate and the Okhotsk Plate. Daryono, the Director of Earthquake and Tsunami at BMKG, stated this in a release on Monday night. According to BMKG data, the earthquake had a magnitude of 7.3.
"Based on the epicenter and hypocenter location, this earthquake is a type of shallow earthquake due to the subduction activity of the Pacific Plate and the Okhotsk Plate," the statement reads.
Triggered by the activity between the continental plates and with a thrust fault mechanism, the earthquake that occurred is categorized as an earthquake from the megathrust zone. Up until 21:50 WIB, a 5.5 magnitude aftershock was recorded once. Daryono stated, "BMKG will continue to monitor the impact of this earthquake."
In the release, Daryono also shared the post-earthquake tsunami observation data in Japan. Several locations recorded sea level anomalies of up to +50 centimeters. Previously, the Japan Meteorological Agency had issued a tsunami warning that could reach a height of 3 meters.
