BMKG Reports of Anomalous Rainy May in Southern Regions as Indonesia Braces for Dry Season

10 hours ago 18

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The southern region of Indonesia is currently experiencing an unusual rainy May, with increasing intensity, while other regions transition into a clearer dry season with predominantly sunny weather and high temperatures.

According to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency, or BMKG, this phenomenon is driven by the damp atmospheric conditions from the Equatorial Rossby wave. This is evident from the negative value of Outgoing Longwave Radiation (OLR) anomaly.

A negative OLR anomaly is an indicator of convective cloud clusters in the atmosphere. "These conditions result in a higher potential for rainfall than usual, especially in the regions of Java, Bali, Lombok, and NTT," stated BMKG in the latest Weekly Weather Progress for the period of May 9-15, 2025.

In the statement issued by the Public Meteorology Directorate of BMKG, it is mentioned that the Rossby wave activity, along with moderate to strong atmospheric instability indices, is contributing to the increased chances for moderate to heavy rainfall that has occurred in these regions in the past few days.

Rainfall is expected to cease in the coming days for the southern regions, but BMKG nonetheless warned that the weather anomalies are still prevalent in the first to second ten-day periods of May.

Heavy rainfall and torrential downpours have occurred almost daily in Greater Jakarta these days. For example, last Wednesday, the recorded rainfall in South Jakarta reached 127 mm. BMKG data also revealed that 101 mm of rainfall per day occurred in NTT, as one of the extreme downpours in Indonesia over the past three days.
