TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning for the potential of high waves in Indonesian waters this week, from May 22 to 25, 2025.

BMKG forecaster Furqon Alfahmi said that the wind in the northern part of Indonesia moves from southwest to the west with wind speeds ranging from 6 to 30 knots, while  in the southern part of Indonesia, the wind moves towards the southeast with wind speeds ranging from 6 to 30 knots.

"The highest wind speeds were observed in the northern part of the Malacca Strait, the Sunda Strait, and the Indian Ocean southern of Banten to East Nusa Tenggara," said Furqon in a written statement on Thursday, May 22, 2025.

These conditions have caused rising waves of 1.25-2.5 meters in the northern part of the Malacca Strait, the Indian Ocean west of Aceh, the northern Natuna Sea, the middle part of the Java Sea, the western and eastern parts of the Java Sea, the Sumbawa Sea, the Flores Sea, and the southern part of the Makassar Strait.

Similar waves are potentially occurring in the western part of the Sulawesi Sea, the Banda Sea, the western, middle, north, and eastern parts of the Arafuru Sea, the northern Pacific Ocean off North Maluku, the northern Pacific Ocean off Southwest Papua, and the northern Pacific Ocean off West Papua.

Meanwhile, higher waves reaching 2.5-4.0 meters in height could occur in the western Indian Ocean off Nias Islands, the Indian Ocean west of Mentawai Islands, the Indian Ocean west of Bengkulu, the Indian Ocean west of Lampung, the Indian Ocean south of Banten, the Indian Ocean south of West Java, the Indian Ocean south of Central Java, the Indian Ocean south of Yogyakarta, the Indian Ocean south of East Java, the Indian Ocean of south of Bali, the Indian Ocean south of NTB, and the Indian Ocean south of East Nusa Tenggara.

"The high waves in these areas could pose a risk to maritime safety," he said.

Therefore, BMKG advises the public to remain vigilant, especially for fishers operating with transportation modes such as fishing boats, to avoid wind speeds exceeding 15 knots and wave heights above 1.25 meters, while barge ships should be vigilant of wind speeds exceeding 16 knots and wave heights above 1.5 meters.

Meanwhile, ferry ships are urged to avoid wind speeds of over 21 knots and wave heights above 2.5 meters. "We urge coastal communities to remain on alert," said the BMKG forecaster.
