China Launches World's First 10G Commercial Broadband Network

6 hours ago 9

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - China has once again reached a significant milestone in digital infrastructure development by launching the world's first 10-gigabit (10G) commercial broadband network. This network reportedly offers download speeds of up to 9,834 Megabits per second (Mbps), which is nearly equivalent to 10 Gigabits per second (Gbps). What are the complete details of this groundbreaking achievement?

As reported by Times of India, the project, launched in Xiong'an New Area, Sunan County, Hebei Province, is a collaborative effort between technology giant Huawei and state-owned operator China Unicom. The primary goal is to significantly enhance high-speed internet access.

Reports from The Economic Times further mention that this service provides download speeds reaching 9,834 Mbps (nearly 10 Gbps), upload speeds of approximately 1,008 Mbps, and an exceptionally low latency of just 3 milliseconds. These characteristics make the service ideally suited for real-time applications.

This advancement is enabled by the implementation of the latest generation 50G PON (passive optical network) technology. This system improves data transmission efficiency over existing optical fiber infrastructure, delivering significantly higher performance compared to conventional broadband networks.

To illustrate the magnitude of this improvement, an experiment demonstrated that downloading a 20GB 4K movie, which typically takes 7 to 10 minutes with a 1Gbps connection, can now be completed in under 20 seconds on the 10G network.

Such a leap in speed unlocks great opportunities for various high-bandwidth data applications to operate more smoothly and efficiently, ranging from cloud services and immersive virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) experiences to 8K video streaming and more responsive smart home system management.

According to a report from Antara on April 23, 2025, this 10G network is also expected to support artificial intelligence (AI) innovation, facilitating smooth data flow for large language models.

Xiong'an New Area, a futuristic metropolitan city located 70 miles southwest of Beijing, has been designated as a hub for testing cutting-edge technological innovations in China. Conceived in 2017 under President Xi Jinping's vision, the city now boasts a 10G broadband network capable of reaching download speeds of 10 gigabits per second.

While Xiong'an currently has a relatively low population density, the presence of this 10G network has the potential to attract increased investment.

With this launch, China established itself as a global leader in commercial broadband technology, surpassing countries known for their fast internet speeds, such as the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and South Korea.

Not only does this enhance user experiences in the entertainment sector, but this technology is also expected to drive innovation across various fields. As faster and more stable connections become available, they will significantly support progress in sectors like telemedicine, distance education, and data-driven smart agriculture.
