The Cincinnati Bengals have released quarterback Mike White amid their woeful start to the season, the team announced on Tuesday.
Bengals head coach Zac Taylor said that the team intended to evaluate their quarterback options ahead of Week 6 but White won't be in consideration at all after he was cut from the practice squad.
Defensive lineman Howard Cross III was signed to the practice squad in a corresponding move.
Cincinnati signed White, 30, on September 16 in the wake of Joe Burrow's injury in Week 2, which could sideline the star for the remainder of the season.
However, Jake Browning has started the last three games for the Bengals, which have all ended in defeat, while White has been resigned to the practice squad.
White's axing leaves Brett Rypien as the only backup to Browning on the 53-man roster, while Sean Clifford remains on the practice squad.

The Bengals have lost their last three games after losing Joe Burrow to injury in Week 2
White has played in 15 games with seven starts in previous stops with Dallas, the New York Jets, Miami and Buffalo.
After a 2-0 start, the Bengals have dropped three straight and have been outscored 113-37 in defeats to the Vikings, Broncos and Lions since Burrow's injury.
Browning has been picked off eight times in four games, second most in the league and one behind Geno Smith of the Las Vegas Raiders.
While Taylor was unflinching in his support of Browning after Sunday's game, he left open the possibility of a quarterback change during his news conference on Monday as the Bengals begin preparations for this week's trip to Green Bay.
'We'll see where it goes. You know, I think like all personnel decisions, we've got to evaluate it,' Taylor said when asked if Browning will start on Sunday. 'Jake's been very accountable for how the game went for him. I've got to be accountable for how the game went for me as well. And so we'll continue to progress here through the days.'
Yet, while the Bengals made one decision regarding a quarterback on Tuesday, it remains unclear who Taylor's choice to start under center this weekend will be.
However, many fans were quick to point out that White's release opens up a spot for a potential move for the Bengals to acquire a new starting passer.
