TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A video claimed to show a blood rain phenomenon in the La Sierra Choco area of Colombia has been shared by account 1 [archive], account 2 and account 3 on Facebook since August 18, 2026. The video shows rain washing red-colored soil down a hillside. The narrator in the video claims that research on rainwater samples proved that the red color came from blood elements from living organisms.
Did blood rain really occur in Colombia as claimed in the video?

Tempo verified the content through a reverse image search and confirmation from credible sources. The results show that the red color in the video was not caused by blood from living organisms, but by a natural process. The events shown in the video took place in Iran and India, not Colombia.
Video Verification
The first footage, showing people standing near a red-soil cliff during rainfall, came from the Arabic-language Instagram account @hormoz_omid, which posted it on October 22, 2025. The footage was recorded along the Red Sea coast on Hormuz Island, Iran.
CNN and metrotvnews.com reported that the phenomenon at Rainbow Island turned the beach bright red after rainfall because of the high concentration of iron oxide in its volcanic soil. NASA Earth Observatory explained that salt domes on the island push minerals such as clay, carbonates and iron-rich rocks to the surface, causing them to turn red when they interact with water.
Meanwhile, in the next footage showing a phenomenon in which rainwater turns deep red, identical footage was found in a post by BBC Studios published on September 27, 2008, and by The Weather Channel published on November 7, 2014. The event occurred in Kerala, India, in July 2001.
A Harvard publication found that the red color was caused by microscopic particles resembling biological cells that were carried by rainwater. Although the particles had a cellular structure, laboratory EDAX testing and DNA testing using ethidium bromide fluorescence techniques showed that the organic particles did not contain DNA or blood cells from living organisms.
