TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A black-and-white photo uploaded by an X account [archive] claims to show the destruction of an Israeli city on March 4, 2026. The caption of the post states that Israeli territory was flattened by thousands of Iranian missiles in retaliation.
"The only building still visible is the Mossad building," the account wrote. The content garnered significant attention, racking up 31,500 views and 171 comments from netizens.

However, is this photo truly of an Israeli city destroyed by Iranian missile strikes?
FACT CHECK
Tempo verified the photo through a Google reverse image search and comparison with credible sources. The results demonstrate that the photo does not capture Israel, but rather the city of Hiroshima, Japan, following the atomic bombing in 1945.
The footage is identical to an archive held by the British media outlet The Telegraph. The photo documents the destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, taken by Cecil Arthur Creber less than a month after the atomic bombs were dropped.

According to The Independent, Creber was a British Navy engineering officer serving in the Far East toward the end of World War II. He was among the first British personnel to set foot in Hiroshima after the nuclear attack.
A similar photo is also held in the official archives of the Australian War Memorial.
Iranian Missile Attack on Israel
A day after the confirmation of the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a U.S. and Israeli attack, Tehran targeted U.S. military bases in the Gulf region and Israel.
According to Al Jazeera, CCTV footage showed an Iranian missile hitting a residential area in Beersheba, Israel, on March 2, 2026. The incident injured at least 19 people. The Israeli military claimed its air defense system successfully intercepted a wave of follow-up missiles.
Quoting CNN, the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) reported that more than 1,000 Iranians were killed in allied attacks. The Pentagon also confirmed the deaths of two U.S. military personnel in a drone strike in Kuwait on Sunday, March 1, 2026.
As of March 9, 2026, U.S. and Israeli aggression continued to target strategic facilities. The Guardian reported that the attacks hit oil storage depots and refineries in Tehran. Conversely, Iran's Interior Ministry claimed its drone strikes damaged a water desalination plant in Bahrain. This action was reportedly in retaliation for the alleged bombing of a freshwater plant on Qeshm Island in southern Iran by the U.S. military.
CONCLUSION
Based on Tempo's investigation, the photo of a devastated Israeli city following an Iranian missile strike is false.
