Play was suspended after just 20 minutes at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship on Saturday, after brutal 60mph winds wreaked havoc on the tournament.

The violent gusts brought in by Storm Amy forced balls to move around on some of the greens, prompting organisers to delay play approximately 20 minutes after the third round teed off at 12.30pm.

Robert MacIntyre, who performed superbly on Friday and secured seven birdies despite the brutal weather conditions, held a share of the clubhouse lead when play was suspended.

Speaking on the fierce weather conditions at the tournament, which is being played across three courses at St Andrews, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns, he said on Friday: 'It was almost a perfect round of golf, especially once the weather came in, just a lovely round.

'It's difficult when it gets this windy. It's hard to hit the ball good with the wind. I was having to try and fight the wind on certain holes and wasn't comfortable. But I made some beautiful shots. Yeah, putted solidly in the wind.'

MacIntyre is bidding to continue his fine form and claim the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship title just a week after helping Team Europe secure a sensational 15-13 Ryder Cup victory over Team USA on American soil.

Tennis legend Sir Andy Murray and Wales football icon Gareth Bale were also scheduled to take part at the tournament on Saturday but organisers have now confirmed that no play will take place for the remainder of the day.

They confirmed in a statement on X: 'Tournament update. All Golf played over the three course on Saturday October 4 has been cancelled.

'The third round will be played on Sunday 5 October as a two-tee start over all three courses between 09:00-11:23.'

Murray wowed the crowds at Carnoustie on Thursday, despite admitting he was ‘nervous’ ahead of his first round.

The Scot, who has spoken previously of his ambition to become a scratch golfer, impressed alongside Eddie Pepperell and earned a huge roar of support from the home fans as he out-drove Ryder Cup hero Tyrrell Hatton on occasion.
