Google and Qualcomm Collaborate on Android Updates

Google and Qualcomm have announced a new program that will allow operating system and security updates for Android to extend up to eight years. The program will start with the Snapdragon 8 Elite and will continue for up to five next-generation chipsets from Qualcomm, including the Snapdragon 8 and 7-series to be released later this year. However, older chipsets will not benefit from this program.

In this partnership, Qualcomm ensures that devices using its latest chip will receive platform support without requiring major changes to the OEM code and device platform. This is made possible through system separation known as 'Project Treble' or 'vendor implementation.

'Citing 9to5Google, Qualcomm explained that the program includes two enhancements to the Android Common Kernel (ACK) mobile platform to support an eight-year timeframe. With these enhancements, OEMs can provide longer security protection for their devices.

Seang Chau, VP and GM of the Android Platform, referred to this move as an effort to extend the life of Android devices. 'Qualcomm Technologies Inc.'s efforts to extend the life of Android devices are an important step in improving the durability of smartphones,' he said on Tuesday, February 25, 2025. 'Through this collaboration, OEMs can more easily update their software and security on their devices, ensuring a safer and longer-lasting Android experience for our users.

'Chris Patrick, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Qualcomm Technologies' mobile division, also affirmed their commitment to simplifying Android OS updates. 'Qualcomm Technologies is very excited to take this step forward, working with Google to facilitate the latest Android OS update on devices with Snapdragon,' he said.

With this advancement, Qualcomm is setting higher standards, providing more flexibility for OEMs, thus enhancing user experiences. 'We are looking forward to more OEM devices supporting the long lifespan of Android OS in the near future,' Chris said.

This program will first be implemented on smartphones powered by Snapdragon 8 Elite and running Android 15. Meanwhile, Google with Pixel 9 and Samsung with Galaxy S25 have promised seven years of Android operating system and security updates.

Although the final decision to update devices lies in the hands of each manufacturer, Qualcomm hopes that this initiative can lower costs for OEMs and extend the lifespan of Android devices for consumers.
