TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - On Thursday, January 16, 2025, the Houthi militia leader stated that they will monitor the implementation of the Gaza ceasefire agreement between Israel and Palestine aimed at ending the war in Gaza. The Houthis will resume attacks on ships or Israel if the agreement is violated.
Quoted from the Jerusalem Post, the Houthis have long said they will stop this operation if the 15-month conflict ends. Since the war broke out on October 7, 2023, the Houthis have targeted ships using ballistic missiles and drones in waters near the coast of Yemen to show their solidarity with Palestine. The ceasefire is expected to take effect on Sunday.
"We will continue to monitor developments in Palestine for three days before the Gaza agreement comes into effect. If the Israeli massacre continues, we will continue our operations," Abdul Malik al-Houthi said in a televised speech.
The Houthis have carried out more than 100 attacks on ships since November 2023, sinking two ships, seizing another, and killing at least four sailors. The intensity of these attacks has disrupted global shipping and prompted a change in routes.
"At any stage where the aggression deviates from the agreement, we will be ready to provide military support to our Palestinian brothers," Abdul Malik al-Houthi said.
The Houthis, who control much of Yemen, including the capital Sanaa, since seizing power in late 2014, have also launched missiles and drones towards Israel, hundreds of kilometres to the north. Israel has responded by striking Houthi positions on several occasions, including last week when its warplanes bombed two ports and a power station.
Gaza Ceasefire Between Israel and Palestine
Israel's security cabinet has recommended approving a Gaza ceasefire and hostage-return deal starting on Sunday, January 19, 2025. If successful, the truce would halt fighting between Hamas and Israeli forces that has devastated large parts of the densely populated Gaza Strip.
The war has killed more than 46,000 people, and displaced many times over the enclave's pre-war population of 2.3 million, according to local authorities.
The deal could also ease hostilities in the Middle East, where the Gaza war has spread to Iran and its proxies - Lebanon's Hezbollah, Yemen's Houthis and armed groups in Iraq, as well as the Israeli-occupied West Bank.
In the first six-week phase of the three-phase deal, Hamas will release 33 Israeli hostages, including all women (soldiers and civilians), children and men over the age of 50.
Israel will release all Palestinian women and children under the age of 19 held in Israeli prisons at the end of the first phase. The total number of Palestinians released will depend on the number of hostages released, and could be between 990 and 1,650 Palestinians, including men, women and children.
The ceasefire deal came into being on Wednesday after being brokered by Qatar, Egypt and the United States, Israel's main backer. In addition to the release of Palestinian hostages and prisoners, the deal also includes a gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.
