TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ketapang Branch of state-owned ferry operator PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry in Banyuwangi, East Java, has implemented intermittent closures along the Ketapang–Gilimanuk crossing amid unpredictable weather, high waves, and strong winds across the Bali Strait.
Arief Eko Kurniansjah, General Manager of ASDP’s Ketapang Branch, noted in Banyuwangi on Thursday that operational tweaks along the route are part of the risk-mitigation strategy to guarantee that every trip adheres to safety standards.
"Crossing operations are still heavily reliant on marine weather developments, and shifting wind speeds and wave heights force situational openings and closures based on field observations and official recommendations," he explained.
Arief noted that services across the Ketapang–Gilimanuk route were briefly halted on Wednesday, July 29, before resuming once conditions were deemed safe for navigation.
He stressed that passenger safety remains the top priority across all ferry services, with schedule modifications enacted strictly to mitigate risks whenever wind speeds or wave heights exceed safe maritime thresholds.
"Once conditions clear up and local authorities give the green light, ferry operations will gradually return to normal," Arief said.
Arief stated that vehicle buildup at Ketapang Port remains manageable, though the nearby Bulusan buffer zone has begun filling up, leading to congestion along the main access road.
"However, there are no long queues within the port area itself, while at Gilimanuk Port, vehicle queues are still contained in the port maneuvering area," he added.
Arief added that ASDP continues to tighten coordination with the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the Tanjung Wangi Class III Harbor Master and Port Authority (KSOP), the East Java Class II Land Transportation Management Agency (BPTD), and local police to lessen the impact on travelers and maximize the Bulusan buffer zone as a temporary staging area for logistics trucks and other vehicles.
"ASDP is also preparing additional vessels to accelerate queue clearance as soon as weather conditions normalize and shipping is declared safe," he said.
