TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Spider-Man: Brand New Day is on the verge of making box-office history. The Marvel blockbuster is closing in on the domestic record held by Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, needing only about $12.7 million more to claim the top spot.

Starring Tom Holland, Zendaya and Sadie Sink, the film has enjoyed a remarkable run since opening in North American theaters on July 31. It has already broken the record for the biggest domestic opening weekend and surpassed $2 billion worldwide.

But what exactly is the record Brand New Day is chasing, how close is it, and could Spider-Man overtake The Force Awakens this weekend?

What Domestic Box Office Record Is Spider-Man: Brand New Day Chasing?

According to Forbes, as cited by Yahoo News, The Force Awakens currently holds the record for the highest-grossing film domestically, with $936.6 million earned in North American theaters.

Directed by J.J. Abrams and starring Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Oscar Isaac, The Force Awakens was released on December 18, 2015. It marked the return of the Star Wars franchise to cinemas after a decade-long wait following Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith in 2005.

The film opened with $247.9 million domestically and ultimately earned $936.66 million in North America. It also collected $1.131 billion internationally, giving it a worldwide total of $2.068 billion.

The record has stood for more than a decade. Now, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is within striking distance of taking it.

How Close Is Spider-Man: Brand New Day to the Record?

As of Tuesday, Brand New Day had earned $924.9 million at the domestic box office, putting it about $12.7 million behind The Force Awakens.

The film has already made history several times during its theatrical run. From July 31 to August 2, it earned $360.1 million from 4,487 North American theaters, surpassing Avengers: Endgame's $357.1 million opening in 2019 to set a new record for the biggest domestic opening weekend.

It then became the eighth film in history to surpass $2 billion worldwide, reaching $2.411 billion in global box-office revenue as of Tuesday.

On September 4, it also became only the second movie ever to cross $900 million domestically.

Another factor working in Spider-Man's favor is its unusually wide theatrical release. As of Wednesday, Brand New Day was still playing in 3,520 North American theaters, an exceptionally high number for a film 40 days into its release.

Can Spider-Man: Brand New Day Break the Record This Weekend?

The film's recent box-office performance suggests that the record could fall very soon.

Brand New Day earned $18.1 million during its sixth weekend from September 4 to 6, a 19 percent decline from the previous weekend. It then added $5.5 million on Labor Day and another $1.5 million on Tuesday.

Even though the Tuesday figure was its lowest one-day total of the theatrical run, the film needs only $12.7 million more to surpass The Force Awakens.

Based on conservative projections, the film could earn around $1 million each on Wednesday and Thursday, bringing its domestic total to approximately $926.9 million before the weekend.

From there, it would need only about $10.2 million during the weekend to reach roughly $937.1 million and overtake The Force Awakens.

A major drop in weekend revenue could make the target slightly more difficult, while the arrival of Practical Magic 2 provides additional competition. However, Brand New Day has continued to draw substantial audiences more than a month after its release.

If it does not break the record by Sunday, the film is still expected to have another opportunity early next week.

For now, the question is no longer whether Spider-Man: Brand New Day can challenge The Force Awakens. It is how soon Spider-Man will take the domestic box-office crown.
