TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Before downloading an app on an iPhone, users can first view the types of data that developers may potentially collect through the App Privacy feature in the App Store. This feature provides a summary of privacy practices for each application, including the types of data collected and how that data is used.
To access it, open the App Store, search for the app you want to download, then scroll down until the App Privacy section appears on the app's page. There, Apple provides information about data used to track you, data linked to you, and data collected but not linked to you, depending on the information provided by each developer.
For example, when Tempo opened the Threads page in the App Store, the App Privacy section showed that the app collects various data linked to the user's identity. This data includes health and fitness information, financial information, location, contacts, user-generated content, search history, browsing history, device identifiers, usage data, diagnostic data, and more.
Another example is the game Roblox. On the App Privacy page, this app lists data linked to the user's identity, such as purchase information, contact information, search history, usage data, location, user-generated content, device identifiers, and diagnostic data. Roblox also displays the category of Data Not Linked to You, which means that some data, such as Contact Info and User Content, can be collected but not associated with the user's identity.
The information displayed on App Privacy may vary for each application. Some apps only collect data to operate their services, some list data used for cross-app and website tracking, while others only collect data not linked to the user's identity. Thus, users can compare data collection practices before deciding to install an application.
The App Privacy label is part of efforts to improve transparency regarding user data management in the App Store. This information enables users to understand what data an application may potentially collect before granting permission or downloading it.
Furthermore, in a written statement, Apple noted that the App Store security system has helped curb fraudulent practices. By 2025, the company has prevented potentially fraudulent transactions worth more than US$2.2 billion. Apple has also rejected over 2 million problematic app submissions, thwarted 1.1 billion fraudulent customer account creation attempts, and deactivated an additional 40.4 million accounts involved in fraud and abuse.
