TEMPO.CO, JakartaIndia late Tuesday acknowledged firing missiles at Pakistani cities and parts of Pakistan-administered Kashmir. Several explosions were heard in parts of Pakistan and Pakistani Kashmir.

Pakistani military spokesman Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry told local broadcaster Geo News, as quoted by Antara, that India had fired missiles at the cities of Bahawalpur, Muridke, Bagh, Muzaffarabad and Kotli from its own airspace.

He confirmed that at least three people were killed and dozens more were injured. Chaudhry said Pakistan had launched retaliatory strikes against India.

The Indian military launched "Operation Sindoor" and targeted nine locations in Pakistan, according to a statement from the Indian Defense Ministry.

India said it was "hitting terrorist infrastructure" in Pakistan and Pakistani Kashmir, from which "terrorist attacks against India were planned and directed."

"Our action was targeted, measured and non-escalatory. No Pakistani military facility was targeted. India has shown considerable restraint in the selection of targets and the method of execution," the statement said.

The escalation between the nuclear-armed neighbors came after an April 22 attack in Pahalgam, in Indian Kashmir, that killed 26 people.

India blamed Pakistan for the attack and alleged cross-border links between Pakistan and the attackers. Pakistan denied the allegations.

The two countries responded to each other after the attack, including suspending visas and expelling diplomats.
