TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia met with Brunei Darussalam’s Deputy Minister (Energy), Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Mohamad Azmi Bin Haji Mohd. Hanifah, on Sunday. The bilateral meeting discussed the potential for energy cooperation, ranging from power plant development, oil production technology, to potential oil supply for Indonesia.

The meeting took place during the Indo-Pacific Energy Security Ministerial and Business Forum in Tokyo, Japan, on Sunday, March 15, 2026. "This is a golden opportunity for regional collaboration," said Bahlil, as quoted from the official website of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources on Monday, March 16, 2026.

According to Bahlil, Brunei sees that Indonesia has made significant progress in developing power generation from various energy sources, whereas Brunei currently utilizes 99 percent gas for its power generation "and wants to reduce its share of gas use."

He mentioned that the Brunei government is interested in studying Indonesia's experience in developing power plants from various energy sources, including new and renewable energy. Brunei is also planning to expand its national power generation capacity five times its current level, aiming to add 4 GW to the existing 1 GW capacity.

Bahlil stated that Indonesia is open to cooperation opportunities in the oil sector. The government is exploring the possibility of importing crude oil from Brunei to help maintain domestic energy supply stability. Brunei is known to have a crude oil production capacity of around 100,000 to 110,000 barrels per day.

In addition, the Brunei government has shown interest in the Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) technology used by the national energy company, PT Pertamina (Persero), to increase oil production from aging oil wells. Bahlil stated that the Indonesian government is ready to facilitate technical cooperation between Brunei and Pertamina, including transferring knowledge.

During the meeting, Indonesia promoted investment opportunities from Brunei through the Indonesian Economic Development Corridor program. Through this scheme, Brunei is invited to participate in the development of electricity infrastructure, especially in remote areas that have potential natural resources but still require energy infrastructure support.

Brunei and Indonesia also spoke about strengthening capacity-building programs to boost human resource capacity for the upstream oil and gas sector and renewable energy auditor training.

Meanwhile, Mohamad Azmi expressed his country's interest in studying the application of EOR technology in Indonesia. He mentioned that Brunei has already used water flooding technology and is ready to utilize chemical flooding, similar to EOR, to increase its oil production.
