TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian House Speaker, Puan Maharani, received a visit from the Cambodian Senate President, Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, at the Parliament Building today, Wednesday, May 7, 2025. The meeting will discuss the protection of Indonesian migrant workers in Cambodia.
According to records from the Indonesian Embassy in Cambodia, the number of Indonesian citizens' deaths in the country has surged. "This should serve as a reminder of how important it is to protect Indonesian citizens, especially Indonesian migrant workers," said Puan, as quoted from an official statement on Wednesday, May 7, 2025.
The Indonesian Embassy in Cambodia recorded a significant increase in problematic cases of Indonesian citizens, rising by 60 times in the past 5 years, from 2020 to 2024. The surge in cases can be seen from 56 cases in 2020 to 3,310 cases in 2024. According to the Indonesian Embassy in Cambodia, around 75 percent of these cases are related to Indonesian citizens who are trapped in online scams or cyber fraud.
Meanwhile, the Indonesian Embassy in Cambodia has reportedly handled 92 cases of Indonesian citizen deaths in 2024. This figure represents a 24.3 percent increase from 2023. Puan argued that this incident is no longer a domestic issue, but has been categorized as a regional emergency.
The Chairperson of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) argued that Indonesia and Cambodia need to expand their cooperation in various sectors. She believes the Government and Parliament must cooperate to address several global challenges. "Parliamentary diplomacy is increasingly needed to build dialogue between countries in facing multi-dimensional crises. Parliaments must contribute and be part of the solution to global problems," said Puan.
As part of today's meeting agenda, Puan and Hun Sen will also conduct a tour of the plenary meeting room in the Nusantara Building or the Kura-Kura Building. Hun Sen had previously met with President Prabowo Subianto at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Monday, May 5, 2025.
