TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government strongly condemns Israel's large-scale military operation against Palestinians in Jenin, West Bank, which has the potential to jeopardize the prospects for peace after the ceasefire in Gaza.
Indonesia sees the escalation of violence in the West Bank as revealing Israel's hidden intentions to further undermine the region and continue its colonization of Palestinian land.
"Israel's violation of international law shows its main intention: to make its illegal occupation of Palestinian territory permanent," said a statement from the Indonesian Foreign Ministry via social media X on Saturday, January 25, 2025, as reported by Antara.
Indonesia believes that the conflict is rooted in Israel's refusal to recognize the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination.
To date, Indonesia continues to urge the international community to take firm action against the injustice suffered by the Palestinian people and to work together to realize an independent and sovereign Palestinian state under the principle of the two-state solution.
After the ceasefire in Gaza began on Sunday, January 19, Israel launched an attack on Jenin and the Jenin refugee camp in the West Bank on Tuesday, which spread to surrounding villages on the fourth day of the attack.
Gunfire and explosions were heard as Israeli bulldozers destroyed infrastructure and shops in the camp, witnesses said, as reported by Anadolu.
The Israeli military operation has killed at least 12 people and wounded more than 40 others, according to Palestinian officials.
An estimated 3,000 families have taken refuge in the Jenin refugee camp over the past two months, including several hundred more who moved in over the past week.
Israeli media reported that the operation was an attempt by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to persuade Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who is opposed to the ceasefire agreement, to stay in the government.
