TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian National Geospatial Information Agency (BIG) has updated the map of Indonesian territory. The new 2025 edition of the map includes changes in the borders with neighboring countries and the location of the new capital city, also known as the IKN.
"This map not only presents various aspects related to Indonesia's sovereignty and sovereign rights, but also clearly shows the boundaries with our neighboring countries," said the Head of the National Geospatial Information Agency, M. Aris Marfai during the launch of Indonesia's latest map on Wednesday, 10 December 2025.
Aris stated that the map of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI) provides information on territorial areas on land and at sea, including territorial waters, archipelagic waters, inland waters, as well as Indonesia's sovereign rights in additional zones, exclusive economic zones, and the continental shelf.
"The Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia is an archipelagic state stretching from Sabang to Merauke, from Miangas to Rote, with a total of 17,380 islands united by the sea," he said in a written statement.
Aris mentioned that the 2025 edition of the NKRI Map was prepared not only as a cartographic product, but also to improve geospatial literacy, enhance spatial understanding of the NKRI, defense, and national security, and provide a comprehensive overview of Indonesia's strategic location.
The map updates were carried out to ensure the consistency of geospatial information with recent developments. Some updates to geographical features in the 2025 NKRI map include the new boundaries of part of the land border between Indonesia and Malaysia through Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) Number 32 and 34 of 2019 for Area II (B-C) B2000 - B 2500 and Area III (C-D) C500 - C600.
Furthermore, MoU Number 33 of 2025 for Area II (B-C) B2700 - B3100 and Number 34 of 2025 for the West Coast Area of Sebatik Island - AA2. Other updates were made to the land border with Papua New Guinea based on the joint declaration of both countries on the results of the measurement of 52 meridian monuments (MMs) using the World Geodetic System 1984 in 2019. There were also additional administrative boundaries in the provinces of Papua, West Papua, Southwest Papua, Central Papua, Mountainous Papua, and Papua.
In addition, the number of provinces has been increased to 38, with the addition of the location of the new capital city Nusantara (IKN) as the prospective capital city, updates to the segments of toll road structure in Aceh, North Sumatra, Riau, Lampung, West Java, Central Java, East Kalimantan, South Sulawesi, North Sulawesi, and Bali.

Other new features included the addition of 10 underwater mountains. In the Indian Ocean, there are underwater mountains such as Pagai, Jogo Jagat, and Siratmaya. Meanwhile, in the Sulawesi Sea, there are underwater mountains like Kawio Barat, Naung, Banua Wuhu, and Maselihe.
