TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government, through the Ministry of Religious Affairs, has officially declared that Eid al-Fitr, marking 1 Shawwal 1447 Hijri, will fall on Saturday, March 21, 2026.
“Based on astronomical calculations and the fact that the crescent moon was not sighted, it has been agreed that 1 Shawwal 1447 Hijri will fall on Saturday, March 21, 2026,” Religious Affairs Minister Nasaruddin Umar said during a press conference following the isbat session for 1 Shawwal 1447 Hijri at the ministry’s office in Jakarta on Thursday.
Nasaruddin said the decision was made after moon-sighting observations conducted by the ministry’s Hisab Rukyat Team, which found that the crescent moon’s position across Indonesia did not meet the criteria set by MABIMS, a regional grouping of religious authorities from Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore.
He said astronomical calculations showed that the crescent moon’s altitude across Indonesia remained below the required threshold, ranging from 0 degrees 54 minutes 27 seconds (0.91 degrees) to 3 degrees 07 minutes 52 seconds (3.13 degrees).
Meanwhile, the angular elongation, or the apparent distance between the moon and the sun, ranged from 4 degrees 32 minutes 40 seconds (4.54 degrees) to 6 degrees 06 minutes 11 seconds (6.10 degrees).
Under the MABIMS criteria, the start of a new Hijri month is determined when the crescent moon reaches a minimum altitude of 3 degrees and an elongation of at least 6.4 degrees.
