TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Indonesia’s Ministry of Social Affairs is preparing a scheme to increase social assistance (bansos) as an economic stimulus for the poor and vulnerable amid planned fuel price adjustments.

"Yes, let's just wait. There will be a special meeting to discuss this, and the Ministry of Social Affairs will certainly adjust to the policies adopted by the President through the designated ministries," said Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf when met in Jakarta on Tuesday, as reported by Antara.

However, he confirmed that his party is prepared to adjust the economic stimulus assistance program for the social sector in accordance with the President's instructions via the relevant ministries.

The Ministry of Social Affairs' program offers two options: "thickening," which involves increasing the value of assistance for existing beneficiary families (KPM), and expanding the number of beneficiaries using existing regular data.

Citing last year's experience, he noted that the number of beneficiaries could increase by nearly twofold, from 18 million KPM to around 35 million KPM, depending on the ministerial-level coordination meeting's decision.

He says that social assistance is designed to maintain people's purchasing power and stabilize household consumption, both of which contribute directly to national economic growth.

"The consideration is maintaining people's purchasing power within the framework of increasing economic growth. The Ministry of Social Affairs' current task is to prepare a distribution scheme and update beneficiary data," he said.
