Indonesia's BMKG Warns of Tidal Flooding Risks During Eid Holiday

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) warns of New Moon phenomenon on March 19 and Perigee (the point when the moon is nearest to the Earth) on March 22. Both are poised to increase sea level height, which coincides with the Eid al-Fitr holiday.

Based on water level monitoring and tidal predictions, coastal floods may occur in several coastal regions in Indonesia, including Banten, Central Java, East Java, Bali, Nusa Tenggara, Lampung, South Kalimantan, North Sulawesi, and several other regions.

"Tidal flooding risks in general affect coastal communities and port activities, as well as salt farms and inland fisheries activities," said the Director of Maritime Meteorology at BMKG, Eko Prasetyo, in a written statement on Friday, March 13, 2026.

The agency urges residents to remain vigilant to anticipate the high tides. 

When and Where Will the Tidal Flooding Occur in Indonesia?

1. North Sumatra: March 18-23

Medan Belawan Coast; Medan Labuhan Coast; and Medan Marelan Coast

2. West Sumatra: March 18-21

Padang City Coast; Padang Pariaman Regency Coast; Pesisir Selatan Regency Coast; Agam Regency Coast; Pasaman Barat Regency Coast; and Mentawai Islands (Pagai Island, Siberut Island, and Sipora Island)

3. Jambi: March 23-26

East coast of West Tanjung Jabung Regency; and East Tanjung Jabung Regency Coast

4. Lampung: March 21-25

Bandar Lampung Coast; Tanggamus Coast; South Lampung Coast; Pesawaran Coast; East Lampung Coast; and West Lampung Coast

5. Banten: March 20-26

North coast of Tangerang (Teluk Naga District and Kosambi District); West coast of Pandeglang (Labuan District); South coast of Pandeglang (Cikeusik District); and South coast of Lebak (Bayah District)

6. Central Java: March 14-16 and 25-27
