TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Head of the National Nutrition Agency (BGN), Dadan Hindayana, said that his institution does not set a menu for the Free Nutritious Meal program nationally. He said that the menu of the free meal will be adapted to the potential resources or preferences of each region.
The lecturer at the Bogor Agricultural Institute raised the possibility that part of the Free Nutritious Meal menu could use insects that can be consumed. Because, he said, some insects can be processed and become an alternative to meet protein needs.
"Maybe there is an area that [where the people] likes to eat insects (such as) grasshoppers and sago worms. It could be part of the protein," Dadan said in his presentation at the Rapimnas Perempuan Indonesia Raya, Jakarta on Saturday, January 25, 2025.
Not only protein, he said that carbohydrate intake can also be replaced with other commodities, so it doesn't have to be rice. In different regions of the country, he said, carbohydrates can come from corn, cassava, boiled bananas, or sago, which are the favorites of people in eastern Indonesia. "We can start diversifying the food. (The menu) doesn't have to be the same," he said.
Dadan said BGN will hire nutritionists for each service unit of this program. The goal, he said, is to create a local menu based on the potential resources or preferences in each region. BGN has set a standard for the nutritional composition of a portion of free nutritious meals. A meal for the students must contain 30 percent protein, 40 percent carbohydrates, and 30 percent fiber.
