TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Iranian security officials have rejected the request of Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei to attend the funeral of his late father and predecessor, Ali Khamenei. As reported by The New York Times and cited by The Times of Israel on Saturday, July 4, 2026, authorities in Iran are concerned that Israel may kill Mojtaba or track him to his hiding place.
Mojtaba Khamenei has been seeking to attend his father's funeral, scheduled for July 9 in Mashhad, and lead the funeral ceremony. However, his request has been denied so far, Times revealed, citing two unnamed members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and someone involved in the planning of the funeral events that began on Saturday.
Khamenei has been absent from public view since he was injured. His father, wife, and son were killed in the early stages of the US-Israel bombing campaign in Iran on February 28. According to Times, he also did not attend the memorial service for his late wife in Tehran on Wednesday.
Four senior Iranian officials quoted by Times stated that Mojtaba Khamenei's prolonged absence from the public eye has sparked concerns about the continuity of his power.
Although there is a written statement in the name of Mojtaba Khamenei endorsing negotiations with the US, hardline conservative groups in Iran have pledged to reject diplomacy until he appears in public or releases an audio recording, Times reported.
