TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov discuss Iran’s nuclear on the sidelines of the BRICS Foreign Ministers Meeting in New Delhi, India.
In a statement on Friday, as quoted by ANTARA, the two sides exchanged views on the latest developments in West Asia and negotiations on the Iranian nuclear issue.
In the meeting, two ministers also discussed Tehran and Moscow's cooperation in energy and transportation, and the situation after the ceasefire in the conflict between the U.S. and Israel against Iran.
Meanwhile, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated that Lavrov affirmed Russia's readiness to help resolve the Iran-related conflict during the meeting.
On February 28, the U.S. and Israel launched attacks on several targets in Iran, resulting in damage and casualties. Iran then retaliated by striking Israeli and U.S. military facilities in the Middle East.
Washington and Tehran announced a two-week ceasefire on April 7. However, the follow-up talks in Islamabad ended without an agreement. This prompted U.S. President Donald Trump to extend the ceasefire to allow Iran time to develop a "unified proposal."
The U.S. seeks to limit Iran’s nuclear ambitions, but Tehran is demanding a peace guarantee before discussing its nuclear program.
