TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Provincial Government is preparing weather modification operations (OMC) to mitigate the threat of extreme drought. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) forecasts an exceptionally severe dry season in 2026 due to El Niño.
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung stated that the city administration will coordinate with BMKG. "We are ready to coordinate with BMKG at any moment, but through the Regional Disaster Management Agency, the Jakarta Government has already made necessary preparations," Pramono told reporters at the MRT Bundaran HI Bank Jakarta Station on Wednesday, July 29, 2026.
Pramono explained that officials will prepare cloud-seeding operations to induce rain if dry conditions continue. He noted that the capital has gone without rainfall for three weeks. "Drought has already struck several areas," he said.
He added that the drought is mainly affecting upstream regions, which directly impacts Jakarta. Therefore, the city administration has begun preparing for various potential impacts of the extreme weather.
Earlier, BMKG revealed that sea surface temperatures in the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean had risen more than 1.56 degrees Celsius above normal. This indicates that the El Niño phenomenon has entered a strong intensity phase.
The warning was detailed in the agency's "Atmospheric Dynamics Analysis for the Second Ten Days of July," published on July 23, 2026. "BMKG predicts that the 2026 El Niño will reach a very strong level," the report added.
BMKG has issued advisory, alert, and warning statuses for meteorological drought across several regions for the final ten days of the month, from July 20 to 30.
BMKG's analysis also noted that the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) index remained in a neutral phase in June. Forecasts suggest the index will shift to positive between September and December. A positive IOD mirrors the effects of El Niño in the Pacific, suppressing rainfall and bringing dry weather across Indonesia.
