TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has urged the public to remain calm following clashes that erupted on Jalan Matraman Dalam and spilled over onto Jalan Tambak in Menteng, Jakarta, on Sunday, July 26, 2026. He stated that security units have been deployed to maintain order in the area.
"Specifically as the Governor of Jakarta, I urge all our citizens to stay level-headed and refrain from actions that could provoke conflict," Pramono told reporters at Balai Agung, Jakarta City Hall, on Monday, July 27, 2026.
He also urged residents not to spread unverified information or disinformation. Furthermore, Pramono strictly warned against damaging public facilities.
The former Cabinet Secretary expressed deep sorrow over the violent outbreak. "The Jakarta Provincial Government extends its deep concern, sadness, and grief over the incident that occurred in the Matraman area," he said.
He then called on everyone to safeguard Jakarta together. He emphasized that the "Jaga Jakarta" (Guard Jakarta) slogan is crucial during this time.
To that end, he instructed the Jakarta administration to coordinate with relevant stakeholders to ensure the situation remains peaceful and orderly. "Coordinate with law enforcement, community leaders, religious figures, and youth leaders," he said.
What Caused the Clash
Earlier, clashes between groups of residents broke out on Jalan Tambak, Menteng, Central Jakarta, on Sunday, July 26, 2026. Central Jakarta Metro Police Chief Senior Commissioner Reynold E. P. Hutagalung stated that the unrest was sparked when a group vandalized a local nasi uduk food cart. "This resulted in stone-throwing and an exchange of projectiles," Reynold said in a written statement on Sunday.
The violent brawl left two individuals, identified by the initials K and DS, critically injured and rushed to Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM). K later died of his injuries.
The clashes also involved incidents of arson. Consequently, a semi-permanent building and four motorcycles were set on fire.
Jakarta Metropolitan Police investigators have named seven suspects in connection with the resident clashes in Matraman, East Jakarta, on Sunday, July 26, 2026.
"In the vandalism case, the suspects are identified by the initials GNA, AJL, FAM, and ELL. For the assault case, there are three: SK, AS, and OR," Jakarta Metro Jaya Police Head of Public Relations Senior Commissioner Budi Hermanto told reporters at the scene in Central Jakarta on Monday, July 27, 2026.
