TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia head coach John Herdman has summoned 23 players for a training camp ahead of the 2026 ASEAN Championship, or formerly known as the AFF Cup. The Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) officially announced that the camp will run from May 26 to 30, 2026, featuring intensive drills and internal matches to assist the coaching staff’s evaluation.
Among the call-ups, Marselino Ferdinan, currently playing for Slovakia’s AS Trencin, is the lone overseas-based representative. The absence of other foreign-based talent is a result of the ASEAN Championship falling outside the official FIFA calendar and Matchday windows, creating potential scheduling conflicts with overseas clubs.
The training camp follows extensive monitoring by Herdman and his staff of player performances in domestic competitions throughout the season. "As the head coach and coaching staff, we have witnessed many matches this season and gained an understanding of the potential of domestic players," the former Canada coach said, as quoted from the official PSSI website.
He emphasized that the camp serves as a decisive period for players to earn their spot. "This is an important moment for the players to demonstrate their quality and secure a place in the AFF Cup squad," Herdman noted.
Standout performers not only have the chance to make the final tournament roster but may also be considered for the senior national team’s FIFA Matchday fixtures scheduled for June.
The 2026 ASEAN Championship is slated for July 24 to August 26. Indonesia is placed in Group A alongside Vietnam, Singapore, Cambodia, and the winner of the qualification playoff between Brunei Darussalam and Timor Leste.
