TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's state-owned railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) continues to innovate by implementing face recognition technology to streamline the train passenger boarding process. This innovation not only increases efficiency but also aligns with the company's efforts to reduce carbon emissions in the transportation sector.

KAI's Vice President of Public Relations, Anne Purba, revealed that this facial recognition technology has been implemented at 22 stations and will continue to expand. "Face recognition boarding gate technology implements digital technology when customers board," said Anne, as reported by Antaranews.

How Does Face Recognition Technology Work?

This facial recognition technology uses a sophisticated camera to identify and validate passengers' identities through their faces. Passenger facial data is integrated with their ticket data. This allows long-distance train passengers to eliminate the need to present various personal documents, such as physical boarding passes, e-boarding passes, or ID cards.

The use of this technology aims to speed up the boarding process and improve passenger comfort. Furthermore, this system eliminates the hassle of printing physical tickets, making the boarding process more efficient.

One of the positive impacts resulting from the implementation of this technology is paper savings. Anne stated that between January and July 2025, KAI managed to save 16,295 rolls of paper normally used to print physical tickets. This savings is estimated to be equivalent to Rp230 million.

"These savings align with sustainability principles and have a direct impact on environmental preservation," she said.

Since the technology was implemented three years ago, KAI has recorded more than 16 million customers utilizing the facial recognition boarding service. In the three years of implementation, KAI saved a total of 40,296 rolls of paper, equivalent to more than Rp599 million in ticket printing costs. This figure is predicted to continue to increase as more users utilize this technology at stations equipped with the system.

Anne also explained that the digitalization implemented by PT KAI, including the use of facial recognition and the Access by KAI application, is part of the company's efforts to create public transportation that is more responsive to technological developments. "KAI today is different from the KAI of the past.

Learning from the COVID-19 experience, we accelerated digitalization by introducing e-boarding passes, which allow passengers to go directly to the platform without having to print a physical ticket," she said.

This digital innovation not only improves operational efficiency but also supports the creation of faster and more convenient services for customers. By reducing reliance on manual processes, such as ticket printing, this digital system also plays a role in environmentally friendly operations.

KAI aims to continue developing increasingly integrated digital services in the future. One of its main goals is intermodal integration, where the Access by KAI application will seamlessly connect travelers from their starting point to their final destination.

"This initiative aligns with KAI's vision to drive sustainable transportation and improve people's quality of life," concluded Anne.
