TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State-owned railway operator KAI President Director, Bobby Rasyidin, has asserted that the company will shut down unauthorized railway crossings controlled by mass organizations if they fail to meet safety standards. "We must close them. If it requires legal action, we will pursue it," he stated at Bekasi Station on Wednesday, April 29, 2026.
Bobby stated that KAI, in coordination with the Directorate General of Railways at the Ministry of Transportation, will conduct a comprehensive review of all railway crossings. He ensured that illegal crossings failing to satisfy safety requirements would be closed.
He also appealed to the public to refrain from reopening railway crossings that have been shuttered by KAI due to safety concerns.
Furthermore, Bobby requested that the public respect and not violate KAI’s official operational crossings. He explained that these official crossings are equipped with advanced sensors, rather than just simple gate portals.
On the same occasion, Bobby stated that KAI will upgrade safety features at 1,800 crossings, both official and unofficial. Safety efforts include constructing overpasses or flyovers and installing automated gate systems. "There is no compromise. We have seen that even a slight disturbance in safety results in many casualties," he said.
Meanwhile, Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi stated that authorities have identified priority locations among thousands of crossing points requiring improvement. "Those posing a significant danger will be prioritized for upgrades this year," he said.
