TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – King Charles III delivered a historic address to a joint session of the United States Congress on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, emphasizing the importance of alliances, democratic values, and climate action while seeking to reinforce strained ties between the United States and the United Kingdom.

The speech marked only the second time a British monarch has addressed Congress, following Queen Elizabeth II in 1991, and formed part of the King’s state visit ahead of the United States’ 250th anniversary of independence.

As reported by Foreign Policy, Charles delivered pointed remarks that appeared to contrast with policies associated with Donald Trump, while maintaining a broader message of unity. “America’s words carry weight and meaning,” he said, adding that the nation’s actions “matter even more.”

The monarch underscored shared democratic principles, including diversity, interfaith understanding, and checks on executive power. He also called for continued support for Ukraine, stressing the need for “unyielding resolve” in defending the country amid ongoing conflict.

Charles highlighted the importance of multilateral cooperation, praising alliances such as NATO and AUKUS, while warning against isolationism. He urged policymakers to avoid becoming “ever more inward-looking.”

Climate change also featured prominently, with the King warning of environmental threats, including melting Arctic ice caps, and calling for stronger global commitment.

The address comes at a time of strained relations between Washington and London, partly due to differing positions on international conflicts. Despite this, Charles framed the relationship as enduring, noting that periods of disagreement have historically been followed by “reconciliation and renewal.”

According to BBC, the King acknowledged “times of great uncertainty” facing both nations, referencing conflicts in Europe and the Middle East as well as broader challenges to democracy. He emphasized that while the two countries do not always agree, their cooperation can deliver benefits “not just for our peoples, but of all peoples.”

Five Takeaways from the King’s Address

First, Charles opened by acknowledging global instability, describing the current period as one of “great uncertainty” shaped by geopolitical tensions and democratic challenges.

Second, his remarks on executive power and checks and balances—rooted in traditions such as the Magna Carta—drew strong reactions, particularly among lawmakers concerned about limits on presidential authority.

Third, the King reaffirmed the transatlantic alliance, highlighting the importance of NATO and recalling its collective defense role following the September 11 attacks, while stressing continued cooperation between the US and Europe.

Fourth, the speech avoided direct reference to high-profile controversies such as the case involving Jeffrey Epstein, despite public expectations, mentioning only the need to support victims of societal harms.

Fifth, Charles incorporated moments of humor, referencing Oscar Wilde and joking about historical ties between the two nations, helping to ease tensions during the visit.

The address drew strong applause from lawmakers across party lines, though some of its remarks were seen as resonating particularly with Democratic lawmakers.

According to Buckingham Palace, the visit aims to recognize the shared history between the two countries. Following the congressional address, the King attended a state dinner at the White House before continuing his trip to New York and Virginia, including a visit to Arlington National Cemetery.
