TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Legendary Portuguese midfielder Luis Figo has urged FIFA President Gianni Infantino to step down.
"Today, I join various figures in the football world in urging Gianni Infantino to resign from his position as FIFA President," Figo wrote on his X account on Thursday.
According to Figo, Infantino has tarnished the honor of the office—whose prestige he had previously promised to elevate—and has engaged in dishonesty and deception.
The former Barcelona and Real Madrid player believes Infantino is attempting to enrich himself at the expense of the sport he is supposed to serve.
Figo argues that Infantino has lost the support of his senior staff, his closest advisors, the vast majority of those who have dedicated their lives to football, and even recipients of the FIFA Peace Award.
"It is too late to save his dignity, but not too late to save football. He must step down. Right now," Luis Figo concluded.
Infantino has come under intense public scrutiny within the football community after floating the idea of selling shares in the FIFA World Cup to private investors.
The proposal sparked a strong backlash from various quarters, including continental confederations such as UEFA, Concacaf, and the AFC.
