TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The El Nino phenomenon can cause extreme weather, which can increase electricity needs due to higher temperatures. This is especially true for households that use cooling equipment.
El nino could also disrupt food supply chains and add to inflationary pressures, Malaysian Economic Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir said in a press conference on Monday, July 27, ANTARA reported.
"Changes in weather conditions are another area that we need to monitor closely," he said. He said that any disruption to the food supply chain will impact inflation and related issues.
"This has become a key challenge for the Ministry of Economy because, during the first half of the year, we had to deal with the global supply crisis. As a result, our discussions and narrative on longer-term plans may have been delayed or shifted towards addressing more immediate crises," Akmal said.
The Minister assessed that rice supplies would be sufficient until the end of 2026, while prices of several food commodities, including meat and vegetables, had begun to decline, despite continued fluctuations in the prices of other staple goods.
The 2026 El Nino phenomenon is predicted to occur from October 2026 to January 2027. It brings hotter and drier weather conditions and has the potential to trigger temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius.
