Ruben Amorim got some much needed relief after his beleaguered Manchester United side delivered a 2-0 win over Sunderland.
Regis Le Bris' newly-promoted side had been one of the surprises of the season so far as they pitched up at a storm ridden Old Trafford.
But they looked badly out of sorts here - much to Manchester United and Amorim's relief - as first half goals from Mason Mount and Benjamin Sesko ensured a precious three points for United.

Benjamin Sesko made it two goals in two games as he helped fire Man United to a 2-0 victory
MANCHESTER UNITED (3-4-2-1)
Senne Lammens - 7.5
Handed his Manchester United debut and he didn’t disappointment. The young Belgian was a calming presence all afternoon and he made a brilliant diving save to keep out a piledriver from Granit Xhaka on the stroke of half-time. Late on he denied Chemsidine Talbi one on one with his legs. Arguably won the biggest cheer of the day, too, when he came out to claim a looping cross at the end off the first half.
Leny Yoro - 6
Recalled to the starting XI and the teenager didn’t put a foot wrong on what was a fairly routine afternoon for a Manchester United backline. His passing ability - while it didn’t always come off - means that moving forward he has to be a starter. The days of a benched Yoro need to be resigned to history in my opinion.
Matthjis de Ligt - 6.5
Looked much more comfortable moving back to a central role after showing off some of his old bad habits last weekend at Brentford when playing on the right side. It is more often his voice that you can hear above others as he looks to be the leader others in the backline can follow. Lammens’ composure no doubt helped him settle down early on, too.
Senne Lammens made a magnificent Man United debut to earn a clean sheet at Old Trafford
Luke Shaw - 6
This was perhaps the most contentious selection call of the back three but bar an early lapse in concentration which Sunderland failed to punish, Shaw handled any issue that came his way. He’s been through so many ups and downs during his time at United that bumps in the road don’t faze him like they do younger players. It’s certainly a factor in his continued selection with the stakes as fraught as they are.
Amad - 8
Back in the fold after missing the Brentford game through compassionate leave, this was a display that showed how vital an in-form Amad is to the Ruben Amorim system working. He had Arthur Masuaku on toast all afternoon, even after Sunderland switched to a back five. Should have scored a header after Bruno Fernandes hit the crossbar in the first half.
Casemiro - 6
Played to a role that suits him much better with a workload that is far more manageable. Casemiro was neat and tidy with simple passes but was also aggressive in the right situations, particularly on Sunderland set pieces. Played in a way that allowed the more creative players ahead of him to thrive. Booked.
Bruno Fernandes - 6.5
A lot was made of the fact that he supposedly doesn’t like playing in a deeper role - he absolutely does - during the week but this was a first half at least that underlined why Amorim likes him there. Every attack went through the United captain and he almost scored a stunner when he curled one onto the crossbar. He’s had more eye-catching days but this was a solid display.
Amad Diallo (right) was a livewire as Casemiro (left) and Bruno Fernandes kept it simple
Diogo Dalot - 6
Was caught napping in the early minutes when Sunderland nearly took the lead but he soon settled down and made key contributions in attack. His long throw is a new weapon in the arsenal of this more direct United side and it caused chaos to lead to Sesko's goal for 2-0. Shut down much of Sunderland's threat down his less preferred left side.
Bryan Mbeumo - 7
So many Manchester United signings arrive and find the shirt too heavy a load. Not Mbeumo. He has slotted in with ease here and once again showed so much danger and threat to the opposition. It was his cracking cross to tee up Mount that set United on their way from a place where they never looked back.
Mason Mount - 7.5
There is a reason managers for club and country have always insisted they can count on Mason Mount and he showed why Amorim has that same belief in this performance. He opened the scoring with an Incredible goal, taking down Bryan Mbeumo's cross with aplomb. It marks the first time United have scored in the opening 10 minutes of a game this season.
Benjamin Sesko - 7
Came in for some unfair scrutiny after a tough first few games where service was at a real premium but his goal here - a first United goal at Old Trafford - made it two in two for the gangly Slovenian. So much of his work in building up play is top class and shouldn't go under the radar.
Sesko is brilliant in his build-up play but will be judged on goals so scoring here felt crucial

Came into this game under a mountain of pressure and clad in his adidas tracksuit he stood up to it all and came out the other side with a win that cannot be understated in its importance. Whether it is enough to save his job time will tell but he needed a win, shook his team up with five changes from the loss at Brentord, and got it. Job done.
