The parent company of Facebook and Instagram, Meta, tightened its rules regarding employees who voice internal criticism to the public. This is due to data leaks being a serious violation of company regulations, as quoted by Antara on Friday, February 28, 2025. "We provide regular reminders that leaking internal information, regardless of the intention, goes against our policies," said Meta spokesperson Dave Arnold in a report by The Verge.
Meta fired about 20 employees suspected of leaking company secrets to the public. The dismissals were the culmination of Meta's internal investigation to stem data leaks, especially after a series of discussions including meetings with CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
This policy comes in the midst of a series of controversial decisions by Zuckerberg, such as changes in content moderation policies, termination of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) program, and layoffs.
Zuckerberg also increasingly restricts internal communication transparency, including cutting back on open Q&A sessions in all-hands meetings.
Regulatory Efforts
Meta confirmed that 20 employees were fired for policy violations. "We recently conducted an investigation that resulted in about 20 employees being fired for sharing confidential information outside the company," said Dave Arnold.
He estimated that there will be more employees ousted from the company. "We take this matter seriously and will continue to take action as we identify leaks," he said.
This move comes after the media frequently published internal Meta documents, including undisclosed product plans and leadership meeting results. In an internal meeting leaked to the public, Zuckerberg stated that layoffs were a step to improve company efficiency.
However, this decision has sparked concerns among the staff, especially after Meta discontinued several employee amenities such as free electric car charging. "It's better for employees who won't be staying in the long run," he said.
Internal Communication Restrictions
Meta changed the meeting format by not displaying the most popular question lists and disabling the comment section during live broadcasts. Zuckerberg opened the meeting with a complaint, "We are trying to be transparent, but everything I say leaks."
He stressed that the company will avoid topics that could potentially damage values if discussed openly. This move is seen as an effort to close the dialogue space between employees and management.
On the content moderation side, Zuckerberg defended policy changes by stating that the Meta platform must be an open discussion space, although the allowed content does not always align with the company's values. "We've been too restrictive. Now we want to be more lenient," he said.
