TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The government and the House of Representatives (DPR) have agreed to cancel the granting of mining permits to higher education institutions. Chairperson of the DPR's Commission X, Hetifah Sjaifudian, appreciates the decision to revoke the ability of universities to manage mining. "Universities can focus on their main role in education and research now," said Hetifah in her written statement on Wednesday, February 19, 2025.
Despite the cancellation of mining permits, campuses can still benefit from mining. Hetifah urged that the benefits obtained must be used to support academic activities, including developing higher education.
This legislator from the Golkar Party stated that universities must still prioritize the principle of sustainability as recipients of mining benefits. She considers that the principle of sustainability must align with the vision of education and the environment. "These benefits should not just be a source of income without relevance to the Tri Dharma of Higher Education," she added.
Previously, the government and the DPR agreed to cancel the granting of mining management permits to higher education institutions. Initially, the provision of mining permits for universities would have been regulated under the Fourth Amendment to Law Number 4 of 2009 concerning Mineral and Coal Mining known as the Minerba Bill.
The decision was made before the first-level decision-making plenary meeting for the Minerba Bill, held in the Legislative Body (Baleg) meeting room of the DPR, parliament complex, Central Jakarta, on Monday, February 17, 2025.
The idea of campuses managing mines was previously a proposal from the DPR, as stipulated in the amendment to Law Number 3 of 2020 concerning Minerba. The Mineral and Coal Mining Bill has been ratified and enacted into law in a plenary session of the DPR on Tuesday, February 18, 2025.
