TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Prosecutors have demanded an 18-year prison sentence for former Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Nadiem Makarim over his alleged involvement in corruption regarding the procurement of Chromebooks and Chrome Device Management (CDM) for the 2020-2022 fiscal years.
The prosecution contends that Nadiem, alongside co-defendants Ibrahim Arief (alias Ibam), Mulyatsyah, Sri Wahyuningsih, and Jurist Tan, orchestrated a fraudulent procurement scheme.
"We request that the panel of judges declare the defendant, Nadiem Anwar Makarim, proven beyond a reasonable doubt to have committed the crime of corruption in a collective manner," prosecutor Roy Riady stated at the Jakarta Corruption Court on Wednesday, May 13, 2026.
The prosecutor requests that the judges impose an 18-year prison sentence on Nadiem. "Imposing a sentence on the defendant, Nadiem Anwar Makarim, with a prison sentence of 18 years," Roy stated.
Additionally, Nadiem faces a Rp1 billion fine, which, if unpaid, would result in an additional 190 days of detention. The prosecution also demands that Nadiem pay restitution totaling Rp5.6 trillion, comprised of two specific claims: Rp809.59 billion and Rp4.87 trillion.
Should Nadiem fail to cover the compensation, the prosecutor stated that his personal assets would be seized and auctioned. In the event his assets are insufficient, the restitution would be substituted with a further nine years in prison.
The prosecution argues that Nadiem violated Article 603 of Law No. 1/2023 concerning the Criminal Code, in conjunction with Article 18 of the Corruption Law and Article 20 letter c of the Corruption Law.
Nadiem is charged with violating Article 2 paragraph (1) or Article 3, in conjunction with Article 18 of the Anti-Corruption Law and Article 55 paragraph (1) point 1 of the Criminal Code. He is accused of enriching himself by Rp809.59 million and facilitating the enrichment of 12 private vendors involved in the Chromebook project.
The prosecutor alleges that the selection of Chromebooks was driven by Nadiem’s personal business interests, intended to pressure Google into increasing its investment in PT Aplikasi Karya Anak Bangsa (AKAB). The company was established by Nadiem and, following the 2021 merger of Gojek and Tokopedia, became PT GoTo Gojek Tokopedia. Google had been a long-standing partner of Gojek prior to the deal.
The prosecutor estimates that the procurement project resulted in state losses of Rp2.18 trillion. This figure includes Rp1.56 trillion in losses from the hardware procurement as audited by the Finance and Development Supervisory Agency (BPKP), and an additional US$44.05 million or roughly Rp621.38 billion (based on the lowest exchange rate between August 2020 and December 2022) linked to the Chrome Device Management software.
