A classy Mac Jones inspired the San Francisco 49ers to victory over the Los Angeles Rams - leaving fans convinced that Brock Purdy's days as their starting quarterback are over.
Jones, 27, produced an impressive display while filling in for the injured Purdy, 25, at SoFi Stadium on Thursday night, completing 33 of his 49 passes for 342 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions in a 26-23 win for the Niners.
Purdy, who signed a five-year, $265million contract extension with the team earlier this year, has been the starter in San Francisco ever since his breakout season back in 2023.
Yet following Jones' superb outing on Thursday night, and the fact that Purdy threw two interceptions in last week's miserable loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, fans believe the big-money Niners quarterback may be out of a job by the time he returns from a toe injury.
'Yea I don’t think Purdy touching the field again,' one user said after Jones led them to victory in LA.
Another commented: 'lol purdy always sucked idk why they paid him all that money. mac should be the starter for the rest of the season.'

A number of fans have claimed that the $265million quarterback faces a battle to get back in
A third claimed: 'he just took Purdys job'.
A fourth wrote: 'Mac balled out tonight. Had to be tough for Purdy to watch. Btw, Mac’s doing it on $3.5M [per year] while Purdy makes $53M.'
'Purdy just lost his job & will be trade bait definitely,' predicted a fifth.
While one simply said about Jones: 'Hes much better.'
Despite fans clamoring for him to remain starter, Jones insisted after the game that he is still very much understudy to Purdy in San Francisco.
'They brought me here to play as a backup and that’s my job,' he told reporters. 'Brock’s the starter of this team, and right now he’s dealing with something, and for him to go out there last week and play when you know he probably wasn’t at full health, he cares about this team. So, I’m just trying to get some wins for him so it helps us down the line, and at the end of the day, that’s what it’s all about.
'I’ve been in his position, I’ve been a starter, and you want your backup to go in there and win, because at the end of the season, that could be the hit or miss between a playoff or not.'
