NFL fans left furious at NBC's new 'remixed' version of iconic Sunday Night Football theme: 'It sucks'

 NFL fans have voiced their fury over NBC's new 'remixed' version of their iconic Sunday Night Football theme song after it debuted for the first time this weekend. 

Country music star Carrie Underwood kicked off her 14th consecutive season fronting Sunday Night Football on NBC, debuting a new rendition of her hit theme 'Waiting All Day for Sunday Night.' 

Instead of the familiar tune that viewers have heard for over a decade, NBC unveiled an aggressive, hard-rock rework – which originally drew inspiration from Joan Jett and the Blackhearts' 1988 classic 'I Hate Myself for Loving You.'

Explaining the change, Underwood said in a statement: 'This year's show open welcomes Sunday Night Football into my ongoing rock star fever dream.

'I love this new version of the track and, once again, Tripp and the incredible team behind the camera brought it to life in a whole new way that captures the spirit of this iconic song and the heart of rock & roll. It's one of my most favorite opens yet.' 

However, it quickly became apparent that not all football fans resonated with Underwood's take on the new theme. 

'Is the worst version of the SNF theme. Seriously, why would you replace what you had the last? This version just seems like empty and shallow. Last year had energy and got you pumped up for the game. This is trash,' one fan wrote on X.  

'I've often wondered what the shriek of a banshee would sound like if it were real, then I heard Carrie Underwood sing the Sunday Night Football song, and it was probably just like that,' another critic posted.

Another disgruntled viewer took aim at the sound mixing, remarking: 'I'm glad Carrie Underwood gets paid a ton of money to sing the Sunday Night Football theme song because you couldn't understand or hear one note she sang.'

'Carrie Underwood was fantastic for Sunday Night Football, but the theme song remix for the stadium overview isn't that good!' echoed a third fan, while others bluntly branded the fresh edit as 'unlistenable' and insisted that 'nobody asked for this.'

The song was debuted prior to the New York Giants' clash with the rival Dallas Cowboys, where the hosts delivered an emphatic statement with a 28-20 victory at MetLife Stadium.

While Underwood's performance may have fallen flat among viewers, other fans were left in raptures by an 'incredible' performance of the US national anthem ahead of the Giants' season opener – just two days after the 25th anniversary of 9/11.

The New York franchise honored the victims of the attacks with a touching pregame ceremony before a joint NYPD-FDNY quintet performed the Star-Spangled Banner. 

The quintet, dressed in uniform, delivered a beautiful a cappella rendition of the national anthem. 

The 'gorgeous' performance on an emotional occasion for the city of New York and the neighboring areas was praised by gushing fans on social media. 

'Goosebumps. Full body goosebumps. Absolutely gorgeous rendition of the National Anthem,' one social media user wrote on X.
