North Sumatra Disaster Losses Hit Rp9.98 Trillion, Governor Bobby Confirms

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Governor of North Sumatra, Bobby Nasution, estimates that the total damage caused by the recent flash floods and landslides across 17 regencies and cities has reached Rp 9.98 trillion. This staggering figure represents the estimated cost across multiple sectors.

The infrastructure sector suffered substantial damage, including 23 national road sections, 3 national bridges, as well as 25 provincial road sections and 5 provincial bridges. These vital connections require extensive repair to restore mobility and logistics across the region.

Losses were also severe in the agricultural and farming sectors. Damage to agriculture includes 4,359 meters of irrigation channels and 26 embankment points, along with the destruction of 38,878 hectares of agricultural land and 5,750 hectares of paddy fields. Separately, the plantation sector saw 28,328 hectares affected, and the farming sectorrecorded the loss of 161,949 livestock.

The damage extended critically to public services. In the education sector, 397 schools were damaged. The health sectorwas also heavily impacted, with 18 hospitals, 25 community health centers, 19 sub-district health centers, and 9 health posts rendered partially or fully non-functional. Finally, the housing sector saw approximately 99,169 residential units and 131 places of worship affected by the floodwaters and debris.

"We from the Provincial Government are trying to accelerate the handling of this disaster," Bobby said after a virtual limited meeting with President Prabowo Subianto at the disaster response post in the Bakti Kwarda Building of North Sumatra on Sunday, December 7, 2025.

Governor Bobby has officially declared a state of emergency for the Sumatra disaster through Governor of North Sumatra Decision Number , valid from November 27 to December 10, 2025.

The latest data shows that 420,631 families or 1,578,014 individuals have been affected by the disaster. The number of displaced persons currently stands at 45,032 individuals (10,902 families). Tragically, the casualty count includes 330 deaths and 650 injuries, with 136 people still reported missing.

"We are conducting thorough search operations. Updates still show missing victims. We will strive to access them," Bobby stated. "Currently, there are 13 isolated sub-districts. Logistics assistance has been distributed, although not through land routes."

President Prabowo Subianto expressed his appreciation for the cooperation displayed in the disaster handling efforts.

"Thank you, everyone worked hard. This is a challenge for us. We have experience in facing major disasters before. But with cooperation and unity, we can overcome it," he said.
