Paetongtarn Shinawatra: The Youngest Prime Minister in Thai History

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto is on an official visit to Thailand on Monday, May 19, 2025. He has arrived and is scheduled to meet with His Majesty the King of Thailand, Maha Vajiralongkorn, at the Amphorn Royal Palace in Bangkok at 09.30 local time.

According to Yusuf Permana, the Deputy of Protocol, Press, and Media of the Presidential Secretariat, the visit aims to strengthen cooperation between Indonesia and Thailand in various fields. In addition to meeting with the King of Thailand, Prabowo is set to meet with Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra.

Paetongtarn Shinawatra, Thailand's 31st prime minister, was inaugurated on August 16, 2024. She is the second woman in Thailand's history to hold the office of prime minister, following in the footsteps of her aunt, Yingluck Shinawatra. She was appointed to replace Srettha Thavisin, who was dismissed by the Constitutional Court. She is the youngest prime minister in Thailand's history.

Born in Bangkok on August 21, 1986, Paetongtarn is the youngest daughter of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who also serves as an advisor to Danantara. She is known by the nickname "Ung Ing" among the Thai people. Her strong family background in the political arena shaped her early steps, even though she officially entered the political world in 2021.

Paetongtarn pursued higher education at Chulalongkorn University, earning a bachelor's degree in Political Science, Sociology, and Anthropology. She then continued her education in England, obtaining a Master's in International Hotel Management from the University of Surrey.

Before entering politics, Paetongtarn was a businesswoman and a major shareholder in SC Asset Corporation. She also served as a director at the Thaicom Foundation. She married commercial pilot Pitaka Suksawat in 2019, and they have two children together.

In her political career, she served as the Chair of the Participation and Innovation Committee of the Pheu Thai Party and led the "Pheu Thai Family" project. She was one of the three prime ministerial candidates of the party in the 2023 election and eventually assumed the party leadership in October 2023.

Despite lacking administrative experience, Paetongtarn stood out during the campaign and symbolized the Shinawatra political dynasty's continuity. She now faces significant challenges, including efforts to revive the economy and fulfill promises of distributing household aid of 10,000 baht to each Thai citizen aged 16 and above.

Paetongtarn Shinawatra has previously criticized the independence of Thai banks, which she deemed a hindrance to resolving economic issues. At that time, the public somewhat disregarded her criticism because she was an inexperienced figure. However, amidst political uncertainty, Paetongtarn has received strong support from the Shinawatra dynasty, which was established over the past two decades. Thanks to this support, she has now secured the position of Prime Minister of Thailand.
