TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has decided that the appointment of the Chief of the Indonesian National Police (Kapolri) must still obtain the approval of the House of Representatives (DPR). This stance was conveyed by Prabowo during a discussion with the Police Reform Acceleration Commission at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday, May 5, 2026.
Chairperson of the Police Reform Commission, Jimly Asshiddiqie, conveyed differing opinions within his team regarding the mechanism for appointing the Police Chief. Some members believe that the President's appointment of the Police Chief does not need to obtain the DPR's approval.
Meanwhile, other commission members still insist that the DPR's approval remains necessary, as is currently practiced. "We reported this difference of opinion to President Prabowo," said Jimly after the meeting with Prabowo.
The Police Reform Commission then discussed the pros and cons of each opinion with Prabowo. Jimly conveyed that the President agreed that the appointment of the Police Chief still requires the DPR's approval.
"The President has given instructions, so it's just like it is now. The Police Chief will continue to be appointed by the President with the consent of the DPR, as currently practiced," said Jimly.
The Police Reform and Acceleration Commission was formed in response to demands to improve the police institution following mass protests at the end of August 2025. Various groups believe that the police had abused their authority in handling the protests.
The Police Reform Commission completed its recommendations in February 2026. However, the commission only had the opportunity to meet with Prabowo at the beginning of May. The Commission's recommendations for reforming the police institution were the result of its approximately three-month study.
