TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto has approved a budget of Rp 60 million per house to renovate homes damaged by recent floods and landslides in Sumatra.

The announcement came after a report from the Head of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), Lieutenant General Suharyanto, during a coordination meeting with several ministers and agencies in Aceh on the evening of Sunday, December 7, 2025.

According to Suharyanto, the disaster affected 37,546 houses across the provinces of Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra. The damage was categorized as severe, moderate, and light. Severe damage included homes that were completely swept away by floodwaters.

“The number of damaged houses is 37,546, which includes severe, moderate, and light damage,” Suharyanto said, as reported on the Presidential Secretariat’s YouTube channel.

He added that the data is still provisional, as the BNPB and the Ministry of Public Works continue to survey affected homes.

When asked whether Rp60 million per house would be sufficient for permanent repairs, Suharyanto confirmed the amount is adequate for renovation. He noted that families could supplement the funds if they wished, but the assistance would not be given as direct cash to prevent potential misuse.

President Prabowo approved the proposal but stressed that the budget should account for price increases and inflation.

“We need to consider price increases, inflation, and other factors,” he said.

Temporary Shelters

Suharyanto also outlined plans for temporary shelters (huntara) to house disaster victims while permanent homes are being rebuilt. Each Type 36 unit will cost Rp30 million and can be completed within six months. The shelters are designed to offer more decent living conditions than refugee tents and accommodate one family per unit.

These temporary shelters are intended to be used for up to one year before families are relocated to permanent housing (huntap).

However, Suharyanto noted that land availability remains a major obstacle. Local authorities must provide suitable plots, while the central government will oversee construction.

President Prabowo emphasized the need for coordination between the central and local governments to secure land. He even expressed willingness to temporarily revoke or reduce HGU permits if necessary to expedite the construction process, highlighting that land must be prioritized for the welfare of disaster victims.

Based on BNPB’s geoportal data for flood and landslide response, the disaster has claimed 940 lives as of Sunday afternoon. Aceh was the hardest hit, with 914,202 displaced people. The province reported 366 deaths and 97 missing persons.

The government’s combined efforts aim to provide both immediate shelter and long-term solutions for communities affected by one of the worst hydrological disasters in recent years.
