TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesian president Prabowo Subianto held a limited meeting on Monday, April 20, to discuss the progress of the giant sea wall project along Java’s northern coast.
Several senior officials attended the meeting at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta, including Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Brian Yuliarto, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, and Deputy Minister as well as Head of the North Coast Java Authority Management Agency Didit Herdiawan Ashaf.
“Regarding the giant sea wall, it is still in the planning stage, and we will further explore activities related to the construction,” Didit said after the meeting at the palace complex.
However, he noted that no final decision was made during the meeting. The government is still considering when construction of the project will begin.
“Because it is related to the available resources,” he said.
Didit emphasized the importance of balancing resource utilization with environmental protection in the development of the project. He added that environmental aspects, including waste management, would be taken into account.
“One of the main things is that we can utilize environmental matters, so we absorb things related to waste,” he said.
The government plans to build a 535-kilometer sea wall stretching from Banten to Gresik, East Java, in response to the growing threat of rising sea levels and land subsidence along Java’s northern coastline.
Prabowo has previously stated that the project can no longer be postponed. He noted that the plan has been included in the National Development Planning Agency’s agenda since 1995, during the administration of former president Soeharto.
According to Prabowo, the estimated cost of the project is around US$80 billion.
