TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto ordered state-owned railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) and the Ministry of Transportation to construct the Trans-Sumatra railway line and proceed with the Trans-Kalimantan project.
"After Trans-Sumatra is finished, we will move to Trans-Kalimantan. If possible, we will start at the same time," he said at the inauguration of the first phase of renovations to the cultural heritage building at Semarang Tawang Station in Semarang, Central Java, on Thursday, July 30, 2026, as quoted from Antara.
The Trans-Sumatra railway line will connect Bakauheni in the south to the northernmost region of Sumatra.
Prabowo then sought confirmation from Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi and President Director of KAI Bobby Rasyidin on their readiness to carry out the project.
He said Indonesia's vast geographical size requires ambitious development, particularly in strategic sectors such as rail transport.
Therefore, he urged policymakers and leaders to adopt a broader vision and think beyond short-term planning.
Prabowo also expressed his desire for Indonesia's railways to expand more rapidly to cover wider areas, aligning with the country's economic potential.
The head of state added that Indonesia is a strong, prosperous nation that must face the future with confidence while preserving its history as an essential part of its identity.
Closing his remarks, Prabowo expressed hope that more railway stations across the country would undergo revitalization, culminating in their inauguration alongside the launch of the Trans-Sumatra Railway project.
"I look forward to inaugurating more revitalized stations, as well as launching the Trans-Sumatra Railway project. Thank you," he said.
